Hungarian Peace Community Civic Diplomacy Message to US Ambassador in Budapest

In a Civic Diplomacy Note sent on Tuesday to US Ambassador in Budapest, Mrs Colleen Bell the Hungarian Community for Peace has greeted the People of the United States on occasion of 9 May, the 70th Anniversary of the end of World War II. We share the full text of the document:

„We thank to the American People, that jointly with the peoples of Soviet Union and Great-Britain had liberated Humanity from the rein of terror of fascisme and have opened the way to a more just international order.
We are concerned to see, that the process of antifascist joining of forces seems to get jammed in the last years. What is happening in Ukraine gives particular cause for alarm. We are anxious to see that some members of the former coalition aginst fascism, amongst them the United States, are supporting a regime openly collaborating with neo-nazi forces, commetting monstrousities comparables to the crimes of Hitlerian hordes. This is occuring here, in a country bordering with Hungary. We hoped that your Government would had at heart, moreover would granted the implementation of the agreement of 21st of February 2014 signed by all ukrainian political sides, to form a government of National Unity in Ukraine and transform Ukraine into a Federation, in order to assure the Rights of Freedom to the Peoples composing that multiethnic country. We hoped that Washington would helped the implementation of the Minsk Agreement of 12 February 2015, with particular regard to point 11 on the Minorities’ Rights of Autonomy. But instead of this we see, that your Government is espousing the cause of the group on power in Kiev allied with far right. Your country is assuring military, material and propaganda support to a regime throwing in the Army against his own people, the Russian population of East Ukraine, trying to strain by force the nation state unity, trampleing underfoot the agreements which have been signed. At our opinion this behaviour is in opposition with the democratic spirit of 70 years ago and it is threatening with the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine and in Europe. We, Hungarians, we look as indign this behaviour of your country which we are allied within the NATO.
We would like to have answers to our questions:
- Why are you boycotting the Moscow Commemoration of 9 of May of the Victory of the antifascist coalition on Fascisme?
- Why do you look compatible your behaviour with the consciousness of the fact, that there were the Peoples of Soviet Union who have supported the biggest blood sacrifice in the fight against fascisme, and without the Victory of Stalingrad perhaps your country could not live in Democracy now?
- Why should we notice, that American Government turns against his former allied in the fight against fascisme, becoming allied of those who enter into collusion with fascist and neo-nazi forces too?
- What is the goal of the United States with this policy?
Mrs Ambassador,
We would like to meet you in your office to have answers. We hope, you understand the concern for Peace of the hungarian civic society and you will answer to the questions expressing our anxiety. Waiting for your response, we greete you on the occasion of the Day of Victory.”+++
